‘Nothing New Under the Sun?'

Posted on Thursday 02 July 2009

When thinking about the Open Days for 2009 and what new angle we might look at, an ancient truth has become apparent! We always try to vary the theme of our Open Days whilst still giving the public what they want (usually animals, food and activities). It is the only real opportunity for people to just drop in to see what we are, do and can offer as most of our activities are pre-booked whether they are for schools or the community.

This summer’s Open Day takes the form of a weekend show Saturday and Sunday 15thand 16th August. It partly represents a re-run of the event we tried to hold last year that was postponed because the ground was too soft and wet and then, after yet more rain, cancelled altogether. We are hoping that the chances of a third wet summer on the trot are sufficiently small for us to go ahead with some confidence! The New Forest Vintage Tractor and Engine Club are substantially supporting this event so we will have a wide range of agricultural vehicles on show together with various demonstrations in addition to our usual animals, food eating and making activities. It promises to be an action packed fun filled weekend.

Now as for newness; I have in my possession a programme from an open day held in 1992 at the Out of Town Centre and apart from the early computer generated form with added ‘real’ cut and paste it looks very fitting to this summer’s ‘Harvest Home’ as we are calling it!

There are of course new things ‘under the sun’ and indeed at the Trust. The Treehouse Study Centre is still, as far as I can ascertain, the only treehouse study centre in the world and interest in it is continuing to spread. We have had many recent enquiries that range from the Bishop of Southampton and the Deputy Sheriff of the Isle of Wight to the Forestry Commission and the Beaulieu Twinning Association. Perhaps another Biblical reference is appropriate… ‘Don’t hide your light under a bushel’. We are certainly not!
